He saw her at the river, peering through the fenced parapet , staring at the ships till they disappeared from the horizon.
In the dark of the night, he lifted the lamp and she turned her face away from the glow and scurried away suppressing her sobs.
Tales were floating around that a sailor's wife's ghost haunts the river-side waiting for her husband's return.
The sailor never returned and she ceased to exist.
He touched the fence and his fingers felt wet.
