Chin and cheeks : Parts of the body.

Chin is the protruding part of the face below the mouth, formed by the apex of the lower 

jaw, says the Oxford Dictionary.

The Cambridge dictionary describes the cheek as the soft part of the face that is below 

the eye and between the mouth and ear. Cheeks are chubby, slanting or gaunt. Cheeks 

enhance the beauty of the face. 

The shape and size of he chin can be altered surgically using implants for better 

balancing of the facial features. The medical terms are known as  Mentoplasty and 

genioplasty. The surgery comes with its own share of minor side-effects.

In school, we all did the chin-up and chin-down exercise. 

In Kindergarten , one of the popular nursery rhyme is 'Chubby cheeks, Dimple chin'.

Men sport a beard to cover their chin or highlight their facial features. Women's chins are 

delicate and thin compared to men.

Kisses are planted on the cheeks and sometimes gingerly pulled to show affection. 

Rural Indian women sport small permanent tattoos on their chins. It is to ward off an evil 


Chubby cheeks look healthy and attractive. Ladies apply pink/rose colored powder on the 

cheeks to enhance their beauty. The cosmetic industry has a wide array of foundations 

and powders to beautify the cheeks.

                              Exercises for the firmer cheeks 

Breathe in. Breathe out. Fill the mouth with enough water and swish it from from one 

cheek to another. Spit out the water.

This exercise tones the cheeks and prevents/arrests sagging.


She had taken her mother's un-natural demise on her chin. The six year old's stoic and 

unwavering demeanor moved the staff and the Principal.

Miss Rose noticed injury marks on her student's chin and cheek. She knew what next she 

had to do.

The little girl's grades and bearing improved. She had her chin up. Her maternal 

grandmother was given her custody. She began teaching her unlettered grandma to read 

and write.
