Strangers in the night

She danced to the latest Bollywood numbers swirling her ghaghra seductively. The men complimented her with garlands of currency notes and she loved the smell of the crisp notes. At the break of dawn she peeled the mask of grease paint and changed into a respectable salwar-kameez , gathering her night’s earnings , retiring to the warmth of her home and her daughter.

But a ban on the Mumbai dance bars compelled her to take to the streets where the strangers in the night tore her dignity ,respect and self-confidence to smithereens.

Have the moral guardians succeeded in their mission?
